About the Fort Buford 6th Infantry

The Fort Buford Sixth Infantry was established in 1962, by Ben Innis, a North Dakota historian and promoter of Western American history. Ben’s specific interest was the history of the Missouri- Yellowstone Confluence Area. Ben was also one of many individuals that helped to get Fort Union Trading Post in the National Park System in 1966.

The Fort Buford Sixth Infantry has been a living history organization that is dedicated to preserving the history of the Missouri-Yellowstone Confluence Area and the history of the common soldier that was stationed at Fort Buford throughout the fort’s history from 1866-1895.

The Sixth Infantry has been involved in numerous living history and historical education events throughout its history. The Fort Buford Sixth Infantry remains active in community events throughout the year with events at Fort Buford State Historic Site and others in the Confluence Region.

The Fort Buford Sixth Infantry is dedicated to the study and interpretation of the Post Civil War era from the viewpoint of the individual soldier.
