WILLISTON, N.D. — The public is invited to the 6th Infantry Living History Encampment and annual flag raising May 23–24, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Fort Buford State Historic Site. The free, family-friendly event highlights the fort’s role during the 1876 campaign season and honors soldiers who served on the northern Plains.

In recognition of the 150th anniversary of the Battle of the Little Bighorn, the encampment has been moved to May to better reflect Fort Buford’s role as a key supply and staging base. Living historians will demonstrate how soldiers prepared for campaign, including packing supplies, issuing rations, and organizing equipment, along with interpretive talks on frontier Army logistics.

The weekend centers on the annual flag raising, marking the start of the tourism season.
