The 6th Infantry members, dressed in their 1876 Garrison attire, participate annually in the Williston Band Day Parade, showcasing historical military traditions and uniforms from the late 19th century.

To kick off the tourism season, a historical 37-star US Flag is ceremoniously raised at noon CST, symbolizing the rich heritage and inviting visitors to explore the era it represents.

Saturday July 12- Sunday July 13th, 2025

Experience history come to life at the Annual Living History event held at Fort Buford State Historic Site. Step back in time and immerse yourself in the sights, sounds, and stories of the past as reenactors bring the frontier era of the fort to vivid life. Discover the daily routines, traditions, and challenges faced by soldiers and civilians during this captivating historical event.

This year, the 6th Infantry is recreating the summer leading up to the Great Sioux War of 1876. The summer of 1875 saw Co’s E&G return from detached service. From May-June 1875, Companies of the 6th Infantry served as an escort for famous Civil War cavalry general, and current Military Secretary, General Sheridan and escort for Lt. Colonel Forsyth while they scouted, β€œ10 miles into the Clark’s Fork of the Yellowstone River.”

By August, according to Post Returns, Fort Buford received 60 fresh recruits for companies of the 6th Infantry, with three of those recruits being sent to the 7th Infantry, currently stationed at Fort Shaw, Montana Territory.
