Fort Buford
6th Infantry Encampment

"Belt Plates & Box Nails" Ft. Buford, 1876

Saturday May 23rd- Sunday May 24, 2026

Belt Plates & Box Nails transports visitors to May 1876, when the 6th Infantry stepped off from Fort Buford at the start of the infamous Yellowstone Campaign. As a major supply base, Fort Buford played a critical role in outfitting soldiers for a months-long campaign that would culminate in the Battle of the Little Bighorn in late June 1876.

Through immersive living history, the public will see firsthand how infantrymen prepared for campaign life—issuing equipment, packing supplies, stowing gear, and readying themselves for the long march south. From belt plates to box nails, every detail mattered as the Army prepared to move.

This special event commemorates the 150th Anniversary of the 6th Infantry’s 1876 step-off and highlights Fort Buford’s often-overlooked role in supporting frontier operations.
